Preliminarily speaking, Pontolis is gigantic, and large enough that it very well could have been an apex predator - however, it could have also been a huge cephalopod hunter like elephant seals.Robert Boesseneckerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04157434108254005433noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1953405279736337089.post-63577159605268896112013-02-18T14:19:08.681-07:002013-02-18T14:19:08.681-07:00Thanks a lot for replying :> Just wondering, wh...Thanks a lot for replying :> Just wondering, what sort of animal would Pontolis be? As in, what lifestyle did it have based on the skull? I've heard it was a big game hunter so to speak, but then the same was said about Pelagiarctos...Jnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1953405279736337089.post-11434146600489735222013-02-16T18:52:41.586-07:002013-02-16T18:52:41.586-07:00The largest extinct pinniped that we know of is Po...The largest extinct pinniped that we know of is Pontolis magnus from the late Miocene of Oregon. It had a 60 cm long skull - however, aside from the holotype skull, most of what we know about Pontolis is unpublished. In addition to Pontolis, we have Gomphotaria, which would have been about the size or slightly larger than a modern Steller's Sea Lion, with a ~40cm long skull and a pair of tusks in the skull and lower jaws. Gomphotaria would have been about 2/3 the size of Pontolis or so.Robert Boesseneckerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04157434108254005433noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1953405279736337089.post-75693214481478455142013-02-15T19:16:27.503-07:002013-02-15T19:16:27.503-07:00What do you think was the largest extinct pinniped...What do you think was the largest extinct pinniped overall?
